• Remember to check out how much your supplier charges for alterations. If you do need changes making (and in most cases you will) you may well be able to save a pretty penny by shopping around.

• When ringing round the stockists for prices check out if they will be appearing at any wedding fairs in the near future. Many offer special prices or discounts for people buying at these events so ask if they are likely to do this or if they have done so in the past.

• If you are lucky, you may find a few suppliers all stocking the dress you're after. If this is the case, don’t be afraid to play one off against the other. All shops have a profit margin built in to the dresses they sell, so drive that deal down as low as you can get it.

• The world is a small place and getting smaller, and no longer are you confined to your local high street for dresses. Importing gowns from overseas via online stores or EBay stockists can help you to save a small fortune.
