Cake Toppers

Now not every Wedding Cake will have a cake topper, but they are a fun way of decorating the cake. Cake topeers can also add height, allow you to express your personalities, and draw a ‘wow’ or chuckle from your guests. There are many different types of cake topper, from the simple candle and floral display, right through to elaborate ornaments, iced figures and other decorative pieces. The style and make up of your cake will dictate what restrictions there are on the cake topper and many of the heavier ones may not be able to be used on certain designs, so it is wise to bear this in mind. If you simply must have that 3ft, 20lb statue of Mickey and Minnie that represents your engagement at Disneyworld adorning your cake, then make sure that you mention this to your cake maker up front – if they know well enough in advance they may be able to make a few tweaks or suggest viable alternatives to accommodate, but if you leave it too late then their hands are tied.

There are lots of different styles and options out there, and it is definitely worth thinking about whether you want a cake topper, and which particular ones you fancy, in advance of choosing and paying for the actual cake.

Decoration / Presentation

When we talk about ‘how it looks’, there is more than the actual cake to consider. Granted, the cake is the centre-piece that everyone will be looking at, but there are little touches you can make to give it that little extra. Many cakes will be displayed and positioned centrally on a smaller table somewhere towards the corner of your Wedding Reception venue – so what is to stop you decorating the table? A well decorated table will set the cake off a treat, ornate tablecloths, a small flower arrangement around the base or a few lit tea-lights are just a few suggestions as to how to enhance the overall appearance. As well as the table, you may also wish to decorate the stand. If possible, coloured ribbon, organza or a branch of a winding plant such as ivy can make a real eye-catcher.

Finally, there is ‘lighting’ to consider – if the cake is displayed in a dark corner of the room, why not add a spotlight or two – you will be stunned at how imposing and impressive a couple of 60 watt bulbs can make your cake look!

Hopefully, the information in this article will have given you some food for thought – so now why not have a read of The Taste and the Cake Decoration articles and have some thought for food!
