Think wedding coordinators, and right about now you are probably picturing Franck Eggelhoffer from Father of the Bride – you know, that rather eccentric and quite camp guy played by Martin Short? Well, sorry to break it to you, but that’s not what you’re likely to get (unless you shop around!).
Wedding coordinators are originally an American phenomenon that have spread ‘across the pond’ and are becoming more and more popular in the UK each year. With all that needs planning and organising for a wedding it can seem daunting at times, especially if you feel like you have to do it all yourself. Wedding coordinators have an in-depth knowledge of planning weddings, can tailor the event to meet you exact budget and can relieve the burden and ease the stress during what is, after all, one of the most busy and intense periods of your life.
Wedding coordinators will work closely with you and ensure that all your wants and needs are catered for – they will be able to suggest innovative and unusual alternatives and provide a professional service that helps to deliver the wedding of your dreams.
There are quite a number of wedding coordinators out there, all of whom offer a similar but not identical service. Certain companies/individuals will offer tailor made packages that do not provide a one-stop-shop, but instead can help in identifying the ideal venue or source preferred suppliers. Others will offer the full service from beginning to end and may even be able to negotiate discounts with certain product and service suppliers via long term relationships that they have built up with them, although do you need to ensure that they are making an unbiased decision and are not entitled to some of the profits!
With regards cost, it is difficult to say what you may expect to pay. Many companies offer an initial free consultation and then produce a bespoke package tailored to your exact needs – only at this stage will they reveal the true cost! As we mentioned, there are a number out there and you are not obliged to proceed with any quote you are given. As long as you are happy to do so, we suggest that you get a couple of quotes before making any decision. Other wedding coordinators will provide a number of package options, with prices usually ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand, depending upon the involvement you want them to have.
Wedding coordinators are located around the country and tend to operate regionally, although a number of them are willing to travel wherever and whenever you need them to, but obviously the travel will come at a premium. Certain wedding coordinators provide a service right up until the day you get married, whereas others will offer to attend on the day itself to ensure that everything runs smoothly. You should think about exactly what you want from a wedding coordinator, how accessible you want them to be, and how much money you can afford to spend on them before going ahead and booking.
Whilst some love the thought of rolling their sleeves up and getting stuck into planning a wedding, for others, especially in today’s hectic life where free time is at a premium, the last thing you need is a major project on your hands. Wedding coordinators are set to grow in popularity over the forthcoming years (in fact we have heard on the grapevine that one in five couples now use the services of a wedding planner to some extent) and admitting that you need one is a sign of strength not weakness. If we have convinced you that this is the way forward, take your time and get one who won’t break the bank. However, of equal importance is hiring one who you feel comfortable enough to speak to about any element of the day, and one who you feel confident in to provide you with everything you need.
