Unique bridesmaid dresses are becoming more and more common these days at UK weddings. Historically this wasn't the case, and it was often commonplace for each maid to look identical to one another and not attract too much attention so as not to distract from the Bride in any way, shape or form.
However, as times have passed, traditions have relaxed somewhat and now wedding outfits are being by and large chosen to suit the wearer, and not historical wedding customs.
Everyone is different in terms of size, skin tone and body shape. Whilst a tight fitting mermaid bridesmaid dress may look perfect on your slimmer maids, any plus size bridesmaids are likely to feel uncomfortable and put out in such a dress. You should remember that an uncomfortable bridesmaid is an unhappy bridesmaid, so putting a little time and effort into making sure they are at ease on the big day will pay dividends in the long run, and you may even want to involve each bridesmaid in the decision process if possible.
Whilst some may have you believe that unique bridesmaid dresses will look a little odd, especially on the wedding photographs, this isn't necessarily the case. Many great dress collections over the years have featured unique bridesmaid dresses in different styles and lengths, but they are all part of a single collection and can all be used for bridesmaids at the same wedding.
If you are in any doubt, take a flick through a few magazines and cut out unique bridesmaid dresses in different styles and lay them out alongside a photo of the wedding dress. By doing this, you'll very quickly work out what looks 'odd' and what doesn't then make your decision accordingly.
The truth is that bridesmaid dress can be any length or style, and they certainly don't need to mirror the bride's dress. The key is that there are similarities between each of the unique bridesmaid dresses, whether in terms of colour, fabric, style, length, embellishments etc.
