Finding the words to use can be difficult, but before you begin, take a few moments to read the Golden Rules of Speechmaking as set out below:
- Choose words that everyone can relate to, from the youngest to the oldest guest. Tales that involve the words ‘iPod Nano’ or ‘Davy Lamp’ may will probably mean little to the Bride’s ninety year old grandma or the Groom's nine year old niece.
- Don’t swear or tell X-rated material!
- Keep stories short and sweet and avoid long, rambling tales.
- Be natural in your delivery and avoid words that you wouldn’t normally use.
- Make sure your speech has a definite beginning a structured middle bit and a big finish.
- Where possible, stand up to deliver the speech.
- Don’t laugh at your own jokes – especially if no-one else is!
- Remember that your speech is heard not read, so make sure the language isn’t too formal or impersonal.
- Make sure that you check with the other speech-givers that material is not duplicated on the day.
- Enjoy your time in the spotlight, don’t put too much pressure on yourself and remember that there are more important things in life!
