Songs as part of a Wedding Ceremony are certainly not common, but by no means are they unheard of.
As you’ve probably guessed, their inclusion is very much at the discretion of the Superintendent Registrar but if he/she agrees, then they will likely either be heard instead of, or straight after/before, the readings.
It is important to discuss any request for the inclusion of songs asap with the Registrar and should you get their approval, you can move onto the fun bit of choosing your tracks.
We have heard of one case of Angles by Robbie Williams being disallowed simply because of it’s title, but other tracks such as Whitney Houston’s ‘My Love is Your Love’ which contains the line ‘And the Lord asked me what I did with my life’ may also be turned down if the Registrar is either knowledgeable about music or asks to see the lyrics. In most cases however, so long as you avoid hymns, or their equivalents, you should be OK, but once you do choose your favourite make sure it gets the thumbs up from the head honcho at the Register Office.
When it comes to picking out a song for the Ceremony, even with the couple of restraints we have already mentioned, you are still left with a pretty huge choice.
