Highlighted below are just some of the possible wedding readings you could use during the course of your Civil Ceremony. We are currently producing downloadable versions of each reading and these should be available on the site shortly. In order to view the words you will need to have a suitable pdf reader. We recommend Adobe Reader which can be downloaded for free by clicking here and following the on-screen instructions.

  • Yes, I'll Marry You - Pam Ayres
  • Sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?) – William Shakespeare
  • Apache Wedding Blessing – Traditional
  • A Partnership - author unknown (ideal for Civil Weddings or Civil Partnerships)
  • I Love You – author unknown (ideal for Civil Weddings or Civil Partnerships)

We will be adding to this list over time, so if there is any particular reading you would like listing, or perhaps you have even written one yourself and would like to see your name up in lights, then please click here and let us know.

Once you have decided upon the wedding readings, your penultimate task is to determine just who will be reading them. In the vast majority of weddings up and down the country, the readings are a task for close friend or relative, although in a few cases we have even heard of couples convincing Superintendent Registrars or even enrolling professional speakers to help out. However, wedding guests are by far the most common option, so it is down this path that you will probably want to start looking.

In terms of who to ask, it is entirely up to you. Perhaps you have a confident and well-spoken guest attending who will be ideal for the role, or perhaps you may want a close friend (a Bridesmaid, Groomsman or friend who nearly made it into the Wedding Party) or maybe even a parent to get involved. The best advice we can give is to think carefully about who you are to ask and take your time.
