Many Church Weddings will include at least one reading from the Bible and often a second reading that both the couple and the Minister agree on.

Unlike readings in Civil Weddings, the ones in a Church Wedding are often delivered by the officiating Minister themselves, although it is possible, and not uncommon, for the couple (again with approval from the Minister) to involve a friend or family member and ask them to deliver the reading(s). It is advised however, that in the case of the Biblical reading in particular, the couple only ask a speaker who truly believes in what they are saying.

Before going ahead and deciding who will deliver the readings and what they are to say, it is a wise idea to speak to the Minister and ask about what lee-way you have. Some Minister’s will be happy for you to include both a Biblical and secular readings and are open to including a wide range of poems and prose in the Service, others however may have much stricter viewpoint.

Once the Minister has confirmed the scope for the readings, it is then time to choose which ones you would like to include. Some of our favourite Biblical readings are shown below:

·         John – Chapter 2, Verses 1-11

·         1 Corinthians - Chapter 13

·         Ephesians - Chapter 5, verses 21-33

If you are allowed to include a secular reading, why not think about including one from the following list of our favourites:

·         Yes, I'll Marry You - Pam Ayres

·         Sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?) – William Shakespeare

·         Apache Wedding Blessing - Traditional

We will be adding to this list over time and will include the words for each one shortly, so if there is any you would like listing, or perhaps you have written one yourself and would like to see your name up in lights, then please let us know.
