Who must be present? In order to make the marriage legally binding, it must be attended by two witnesses, although it is perfectly possible to have more than 2 signing. The witnesses should be personally known to the Bride and/or Groom, but couplesa are more than welcome to use witnesses off the street - people that they have never met before! There are no laws concerning the age of marriage witnesses, other than that they need to be old enough to function properly as a witness.
Marrying Abroad Many couples these days are choosing to marry abroad. Whilst we are currently developing a separate section that covers this area in much greater detail (available 2007), it is wise at this time to mention the fact that the legal requirements for getting married vary from country to country. In order to guarantee that your overseas Wedding is above board and legal, you will need to ensure that you fulfil the requirements of the country you are getting married in, and those back in the UK. The travel agent you arrange your trip with, the on-site wedding co-ordinator, or the Foreign Office should be able to confirm what you need to do. After all, you wouldn’t want to do what Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger did and find out afterwards that their idyllic Indonesian wedding had no legal binding in the UK!
