Fire
When we talk about fire-based decorations, fireworks immediately spring to mind. However, fireworks are more of an entertaining feature than a decorative item so what we are essentially referring to are candles.
Candles are a multi-purpose decorative item that can be used to accessorise tables, shelves, window-ledges even outdoors. They come in a variery of shapes and sizes and can even emit a powerful scent to arouse the senses. From traditional lavendar and vanilla scents to the more wierd and wacky peanut butter and apple strudel varieties, there's bound to be one that sends out the right smells for your wedding so get searching!
Candles are perfect for decorating all corners of the reception, both indoors and out. Whilst they obviously aren't weatherproof, as long as it is dry, and either your candles are sheltered or it is not too breezy, then they can help to provide a fantastic outdoor ambience once dusk falls. Votives (basically a large shot glass which holds a tealight) protect the flame well, or alternatively you could opt for larger style candles and hurricane lamps. For a more ‘country’ feel, consider placing tealights under tin cans with holes punched in the sides - this provides a cost-effective, pretty and informal look, but remember to peel the Heniz labels of the side first! Outdoor candles are a really neat idea that are becoming a much more common sight at Evening Do'd these days, and if the worst comes to the worst and it begins to rain, you can always move them inside.
Indoors, candles can be used as part of a floral centre piece or to compliment it. Larger ‘pillar’ candles can be built in to a low floral design or small tealights can be scattered around the centrepiece to add a romantic glow to the table. Shelves and window-ledges can be adornded with anything from votives to tealights and you can even place them at intervals along the bar, just makes sure they won’t get in the way of service – or your guests won’t be happy! Wax melts (available in a variety of shapes with hearts being a common option) and jar candles are other more individual options, and the latter is even becoming a popular favour item for wedding guests.
Whatever candle floats your boat, a word of caution. Please make sure that you look out for potential fire hazards - the last thing you want is for your reception to be something an arsonist would be proud of!
Light
Whilst candles may give off some light, they're unlikely to provide all that you need, so with this in mind it's time to pay attention to how you can bring light to the proceedings in a decorative way.
From cute and twinkly fairy lights through to bold and powerful disco strobe lights, there really are a lot of options, and they needn't cost the earth.
