First of all let us say that not every outfit requires that something we worn around the waist so if you feel uncomfortable about doing so or feel that it doesn’t go with the overall look and feel you want to create then feel free to avoid one. That said, waistcoats and cummerbunds really do look tremendous and help finish an outfit off really well.
Available in a vast range of colours and designs, they are another item that can be used to tie together the colour scheme for the day and allow the male Wedding Party to complement the bridesmaid outfits. On the next page, let’s take a look at what’s available:
Traditional Waistcoat
There are literally hundreds, nay thousands, of colours and designs available for Grooms and their Groomsmen to choose from. The vast majority of traditional waistcoats will feature five, six or seven buttons, a small pocket on either side of the belly button and no collar (although collared varieties are available). Waistcoats should be worn fastened, although it is fashionable and traditional to leave the very bottom button unfastened – this also ensure that you don’t take someone’s eye out with a flying button when you sit down at the end of the speeches! Waistcoats have a slimming effect and look great on both small and large frames. Traditional Waistcoats work well with most Morning Wear and for a truly classy look, why not add a pocket watch on belcher chain to the outfit.
Formal Waistcoat
The formal waistcoat is for use exclusively with a Tail Suit. Featuring three small buttons that are positioned close together around the mid-rift, the formal waistcoat, when buttoned-up, provides somewhat of a cummerbund-meets-waistcoat appearance. Normally only available in black or white, the formal waistcoat is ideal for gents wearing a Tail Suit, but, to be frank, a little odd with anything else.
