Etiquette rules dictate that for a formal affair, ladies wearing hats should leave them in place (e.g. on their heads) until the Mother of the Bride removes hers. Think of the power! Typically the Mother of the Bride would remove her hat after the meal as historically, this was when the gentlemen would remove their jackets as they retired for a cigarette and discussions about things which were far to important to be talked about in front of mere women. Less formal affairs, typically where the meal is either not served indoors or is not seated, allow for the ladies to remove their hats after the service.

If you are struggling to decide when to remove your hat on the big day, why not take a steer from the bride or groom (before the day obviously) and see what their views are. Again, it’s important to reinforce the fact that if you are desperate to get out of your hat, you don’t have to wear one.

Head Pieces

Head pieces (or ‘fascinators’ as they are sometimes referred to) can be accessorised with a wide range of items (the same applies to hats of course). Popular decorations include feathers, bows, and ruches of overlaid material (contrasting or otherwise) – even fruit (Carmen Miranda eat your heart out).  Head pieces also often include crystals and rhinestones to add a little sparkle. Fascinators would stay in place for the whole day (and evening if you are wearing the same outfit) and can be worn in various places on the head – but don’t worry, the shop assistants will be more than happy to advise the most suitable position at time of purchase.

There really is a huge choice of headwear out there (just turn on the telly when either the Royal Ascot or Glorious Goodwood horse racing festival is on if you need convincing) from the plain to the extravagant and chances are that there is something to suit you. It is impossible to discuss every single option, so we really recommend that you head out and have a look for yourself – our Supplier Directory may be able to help point you in the right direction, so why not check it out now.
