The profile is similar to the silhouette or outline of the dress. Whilst there are numerous dress profiles available, only a few are appropriate for bridesmaids (other options suitable for the Bride are covered in The Wedding Dress section).
A profile can be created by combining different bodices, necklines, waistline, hemlines and trains to get a different dress every time. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the three types of profiles suitable for a bridesmaid.

A-Line
Featuring a fitted bodice, this dress profile has a defined waist line and a skirt with smooth lines travelling outwards from the hips. Available in different degrees of ‘bigness’ (a key factor for many women in selecting a dress), from relatively closely cut to the leg to falling a foot or so (30cms or so for those metric babes out there) from the bridesmaids feet. This dress profile is ideal for slim and plus-size maids alike. |

Bias Cut
Normally dresses are made from large panels of material laid head to foot with seams running from top to toe down the dress (often at the sides, at the back or to make a panel at the front). For a dress cut on the bias a designer will use widths of fabric laid diagonally across, a seam might run from the left shoulder to the top of the right hip and from the top of the left hip to the middle of the right knee. Where the seams fall and how close they are together depends on the width of the fabric or the effect the designer is trying to achieve. The result is a dress which can be relatively fitted or quite floaty but will, either way, emphasise the natural shape of a bride, particularly their hips - it can even work well for maternity bridesmaids! More of an adult bridesmaid dress than a junior bridesmaid one.
