Having a dress designed is perhaps the the most extravagant option when it comes down to getting your dress for the Big Day, but it doesn’t have to be.
Many of the smaller designers (and we aren’t talking the Mona Vera’s of the world) make their money by designing a gown and then selling on to number of suppliers via their army of seamstresses, not by being commissioned by a Bride-to-be to make a dress for them. The dresses, normally mid-range dresses (say £1000-£2000), are comparable to what you would pay in a shop for a dress of similar style and quality however, you are getting exactly what you want.
Don’t get us wrong, you can (if you have the money and the inclination) engage one of the country’s, if not the world’s, most regarded designers to create the dress of your dreams and for this privilege you could be talking many tens of thousands. That said, if you can afford this, then why on earth are you reading an article such as this – get out there and rope them in!
As with having your dress made, talk to a couple of designers and see which ones seem to be on your wave length. Ask all of them for a rough cost for the type of dress you want - and show them any clippings you have collected which give a feel for your taste and style. You should choose the designer that not only falls within your budget, but also one that you have confidence in.
Once you've sourced your designer, they will work with you to come up with a polished design and construct a dress along those lines. Don't get pressured into compromising (the less skilled ones may want to push you down a route which is 'easier' to make), instead stick to your guns and get what you are paying for.
The end result of getting a frock specially designed for you, will be complete satisfaction that no compromises have had to be made and joy that the final product is just as you have always dreamed (although your bank manager may not share this excitement!).
