Next Summer, Belfast City Hall is to close for 22 months for refuurbishment. The historic building hosts numerous weddings each year, but for nearly two years from next July, couples will need to look elsewhere.

Although the 100-year-old City Hall is not the most popular Civil Ceremony destination in Northern Ireland (that distinction is held by Belfast Castle), it nontheless is a favourite for couples tying the knot.

However, from July 1st 2007, couples will no longer have the choice of marrying in the beautiful Victorian building and instead will be re-directed to a new purpose-built registry office in nearby Adelaide Street.

When the work is complete (estimated in Spring 2009), hopes are high that the City Hall may even topple Belfast Castle as the #1 venue choice for couples getting wed. Great news for 2009+ weddings, not so good news for those folks who had it pencilled in for next year!
