With all the other things that you need to budget for a the moment, this probably isn't what you wanted to hear right now, but it's our job to tell you anyway. Couples don't just get to receive gifts from their guests, they also have to buy them something in return!
Essentially, the gifts for the guests fall into one of two categories; gifts for members of the wedding party, and gifts for guests in general.
It's both courtesy and tradition to buy all of the guests, including the members of the wedding party, a small present, or favour, to thank them for their attendance. Favours don't need to be anything elaborate or cost the earth, they are merely a small token of appreciation, and often a keepsake, for friends, family and colleagues. The article entitled Favours is well worth a read for anyone yet to venture down this path.
Other, more important guests -i.e. the members of the wedding party, should be rewarded with something a little extra special to thank them for all the help and any financial assistance they have given. The Wedding Party Gifts article tackles this area in greater detail and is essential reading if you're looking for inspiration or ideas on how and when to present them.
Of course, the Bride and Groom may also decide to buy each other a gift. Although not legally obliged to do so, (read the small print on the wedding contract if you don't believe us!) such gifts do make for a special romantic treat after the non-stop excitement of the wedding. Watches, jewellery, smellies, a nice outfit or an experience day are some of the most popular options, but of course Brides and Grooms are only limited by their imagination. Bride/Goom gifts doesn't really merit its own article - the only thing that couples need to do is agree if gifts are to be bought, the budget and then it's off to the shops!
We touched on the fact that money might be hard to come by right at the beginning of this article, but if you are thinking of cutting corners, try to look elsewhere. Gifts for the guests are essential purchases. Firstly, they will be expecting something, secondly anyone who has contributed to the day really deserves something, and finally, do you really want to give the impression that you're tight with money? We didn't think so. So as soon as you're done here, take a look at the Favours and Wedding Party Gifts articles and get spending.
