"Marriage is not a ritual or an end. It is a long, intricate, intimate dance together and nothing matters more than your own sense of balance and your choice of partner."

(author, Amy Bloom)

Perhaps it was ‘love at first sight’ and you knew that you were meant to be together forever since the time your eyes first met. Perhaps marrying your partner is written in the stars. Perhaps you have been together for years but recent events have brought you even closer together and you are now ready to make a long-term commitment. Perhaps the bride-to-be is pregnant (joke!). Whatever the reason, the engagement is the start of a long-term commitment, and it is important that you are 100% sure that this is the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with.

There is no acid test to determine long-term compatibility and happiness, and after all they do say that chalk and cheese attract, but even so, seeing whether you agree or disagree with the points that we have set out below may help you to decide whether you are thinking of marrying the right person for you. Remember that disagreeing with the points doesn’t mean it won’t work, it may just mean that a particular element is not important to you both or that you’ll need to focus, and work together, on that area of your relationship.

So if you're ready, ask yourself:

  •  Do you and your partner have some similar interests and hobbies?
  • Do you both have a few individual interests/pursuits?
  • Do you both want the same things out of family life?
  • Do you get the right amount of love and understanding from your partner?
