Getting engaged is a momentous event - it opens the door the next chapter of your life and should not be taken lightly. It's a personal commitment to the one you love, and shows the world how much you care for your partner and that you intend to spend the rest of your days together.
OK, so it may all sound a little scary right now, but think yourself lucky - it used to be even worse! Traditionally, the engagement was a period of time in which negotiations around the 'price' for the bride were agreed - the Bride's family were losing a working asset after all and needed to be duly compensated! The situation went full circle in later years, when the negotiations were replaced by a dowry payment made by fathers to entice the groom to marry their daughter.
Aren’t you pleased that you live in the 21st Century!
Typically, it is the men who have done the proposing, although in modern times (especially on in a leap year, on the 29th of February) women are starting to ask the men. But regardless of whether you sit down or stand up when you go to the toilet, if you are the one planning to do the proposing, it is important that you ask yourself why you'ld like to enter into marriage. As well as this, you also need to be certain that now is the right time to do so. Finally, you need to be sure that your partner really is the right person for you to marry, and perhaps most importantly of all, that it is to you!
If you are thinking about getting engaged, before you jump straight in and buy an expensive diamond engagement ring, we urge that you take your time and ensure that you really are making the right decision - after all, there really is no rush.
