Sure, you may have read everything there is to read on diamonds. You may know all there is to know about bands and settings and may be aware of all the various alternative gemstones available, but just how do you make the final decision and go about choosing an engagement ring? For anyone looking for ideas on how to choose an engagement ring your partner would love, this article takes a closer look at some handy tricks of the trade you can employ to ensure you pick the perfect one.
The first suggestion would be to begin your research well in advance – this will help to disguise your cunning plan. Friends and relatives are a good source of information, particularly when it comes to style preferences, and it’s highly likely that your partner will have discussed likes and dislikes with at least one friend over the years. It goes without saying however that you need to approach with caution as you don’t want the word to get out early!
Sources of Info...
Magazines and jewellers windows are another good source of information. As a suggestion, pretend that you are out looking for a new watch and when you happen to pass the section with the engagement rings in it, pass a simple comment such as ‘I’m not a big fan of that ring!’ and see how she reacts – this can lead to a greater conversation about ring styles but seem natural at the time (if done well!).
As an alternative, and if you are lucky enough for this situation to crop up, if she happens to be telling you about one of her friends who has recently got engaged, try persuading her to critique the ring and ask her what she would have preferred.
If it is an option (and this is quite useful if you are struggling to work out what size ring to get her) offer to buy her a dress ring for Christmas or her birthday and choose the ring together – again observe what she likes and dislikes about styling.
A Word on Sizes...
If you are struggling to know what size engagement ring to buy, one good tip is to think carefully about the style of the ring.
Rings are commonly available in sizes A to Z+6, with H to Z the easiest to find. If you aren't able to deduce the size of her ring finger, certain ring settings are difficult to alter, so check this out before you buy. It's far easier and cheaper to choose a ring that's too big and get it resized down than vice-versa.
If All Else Fails...
If you are really, really struggling, then just ask your partner outright. This way you’ll know that you will be getting exactly what she wants and at least you still have the surprise of choosing when and where to propose up your sleeve!
